Workshop
If you were to ask me what the best new blog of 2010 was, I would have to answer that it was the blog of Workshop, a small design/build outfit located in Brooklyn. Its been fun to watch James and Brian build a business that holds as its primary motivating force, from my perspective anyway, that things should be done right, well and thoughtfully, or that there is no point in doing them at all.
At the end of 2009 I cobbled together a very rough looking site for Workshop. Despite its many flaws they filled it with a revealing look at their work. In the pages of their journal I found an argument for art for art’s sake (even when its a counter top). It is written with pride, but showing great sacrifice and (perhaps most importantly) a human ambivalence that questions their situations without ever doubting or diminishing the joy of creating beautiful things that people love and use.
With this as inspiration I, re-skinned the site, cleaned up some of backend and pushed it all out for them to use. I can’t wait to see what this year brings them. I hope they enjoy it, but it’s been all my pleasure.
